To keep the Ethernet connection alive for Intel's vPro remote management or for Windows 8's Connected Standby mode, however, the docking port would need to have direct access to the Ethernet chipset inside....

HTC faced another setback Friday after it decided to drop an appeal against a ban on its 3G devices in Germany. The company made the surprise reversal after it decided that it wasn't likely to win against IPCom, which claims all of HTC's 3G hardware violates its patents. IPCom claimed that it would have "no choice" but to ban HTC's hardware before the end of the year, as HTC had "never" had any cash offer that could be enough to cover the patents....

A Windows 8 bootkit was created by security researcher Peter Kleissner that bypasses User Account Control, ZDNet reported. Just 14KB big, the exploit code is thought to be the first proof-of-concept that found vulnerability in Windows 8. It runs under the SYSTEM account after exploitation and lets the hacker run a command prompt, defeating the User Account Control by avoiding the user prompt altogether....
